Over the years I loaded about 90gbs of my own CD's onto my 2011 Macbook Pro. I would check or uncheck what I didn't want to transfer to my phone. I would plug the phone into the laptop, then sync the device with itunes and everything would update. So, all the music is mine, and the process was kept in-house.

Over time, the USB ports failed on the laptop, so i couldn't sync anymore. And, my 2011 laptop was wearing down, and I didn't want to possibly lose all my music (I did open an icloud account and kept back ups of documents, etc. icloud does not back up music). I searched online, and discovered itunes match. signed up for the service, intending on cancelling when i replaced my laptop.

i recently noticed that all music (except purchased apple music songs) were gone from both phones. Apparently the subscription was cancelled by me, and i lost access to all the match music. i couldn't reload because the usb ports didn't work. i also went out and purchased an M4 macbook Pro. At the Apple store, i had the genius folks do the data transfer. This was accomplished mainly by the cloud account. However, I had brought my 2011 laptop because i wanted to transfer my music library to the new laptop, and then i could sync transfer my music back onto my phones like i used to.

I was told that some years ago Apple eliminated the stand alone itunes that the 2011 had, and could not transfer like i wanted. they did transfer the 90 gbs into a document file (though i haven't been able to locate it yet). so, i ended up having to pay for itunes match reactivation in order to unlock and access MY music which is now trapped in itunes match. My M4 does not apparently have a hardcopy of the 90 gbs of music on the hard drive. I now need to have internet service to access the music that was once on my computer.

long story, but do i have any ability to download the match library back onto my laptop? i like have the library backed up and linked to my devices, but would like my 90 gbs of music back under my ownership and control.

It's been a while since I used iTunes Match but if the matched files remained in the cloud even after you cancelled your subscription and renewed, and you can see them in your cloud music library on your M4 Mac, you should just be able to right-click the tracks you want to download and then click "Download" and they should go into your ~/Music/Music/Media folder (or you can right-click a downloaded track, click "Get Info" -> File tab -> click where it says "Location"). The file you get depends on its original state in your library at the time of matching:
  • Uploaded to iTunes Match (track did not match on original upload) -> Original file you uploaded
  • Matched with iTunes Match -> "Matched AAC audio file" - .m4a - no DRM encryption - 256kbps Apple version of your track (not your original source file but the same song).
  • Apple Music individual purchased track / album - .m4a - no DRM encryption - 256kbps.
  • Apple Music subscriber download -> "Apple Music AAC audio file" - .m4p - DRM encryption - 256kbps.
Note that you cannot get the original source files of "Matched" tracks back, only Apple's 256kbps AAC representation, you can only get the original source file back if the track didn't match on original track sync and thus the file had to be uploaded (this is comparatively rare)

That's sad, what horrible customer support you received. Even if the USB ports weren't working they could have set up a network share to help you copy over the music at least. I guess Apple is only incentivizing them to push more and more subscriptions onto customers.
