Purchased a MBP from Best Buy a year or so ago. Thought I'd wiped it, someone (we'll call him "Steve") purchased it. I've seen "Steve's MacBook Pro" on my iCloud from time to time, but have been afraid to do anything to it (remove it, erase it, etc.). Received an email from Steve as he's trying to reset it to factory specs and said that the MBP is tied to an account with my email.

What's the best way to approach this? I removed it from my account, but if memory serves I've tried that before to no avail. I'm tempted to just erase it since that's what he wants to do anyway. He suggested I give him a "temporary password", but since my family's devices are tied to this account I'm not going to do that.

Any ideas? I don't want this guy to get screwed over, but I don't want to jeopardize my security either.

Tell him you won't give him access to your account (no apologies necessary). Assuming you are willing. Tell him you are willing to remote in and remove your account. Use a temporary password just on the extremely unlikely chance he's using some keystroke tracker on his Mac.

I use Spiceworks' Zoho connection for one time access. You don't need to install anything. It's all done on his end. You just click the start remote session button. Then give him the link it generates. He'll then have to install the program and allow access in System Preferences. Teamviewer is another option but requires installing software on your computer too.

If he doesn't like it. He can take his Macbook and receipt down to the Apple Store and deal with them. It's not your problem and you were being kind enough to help.

There are plenty of free apps for burner numbers or messaging if you don't want to give him your personal number for this. As you'll need some way of live communication for this.
