Just receive a replacement 15" mbp from amazon last week. Strange thing is, the build date was 03/2011 where my previous Mbp was 06/2011.

In any event, my new Mbp only has a 3gbps link on the SuperDrive port which is odd.

I inquired why the unit I received was nearly 5 mo old when my 1st unit was built a couple of weeks ago.

They didn't know and wouldn't exchange it for a newer build with 6gbps on both ports.

Has anyone successfully used the 6gbps
SuperDrive interface with a sata III ssd?

Sorry for all the newbie questions, I'm in IT and this is my 1st venture into the world of macs.

Cheers

I believe all 2011 MBP's have a 3 GB/s SATA interface on the Superdrive and 6 GB/s SATA interface in the HDD bay

EDIT: sorry, just looked it up, you are right

I have the dual 6g ports, but from what I've read you're better off with the 3g port. The optical 6g port had some problems when running SATA 6g hardware.

Basically, this is the breakdown:

13” – 100% no issues with 6Gbp/s SSD in any bay that has 6Gbp/s available
15” – 100% no issues with 6Gbp/s SSD in main bay, no-go with 6Gbp/s SSD in optical bay.
17” – Hit or Miss for main bay with 6Gbp/s SSD, no-go with 6Gbp/s SSD in optical bay.
