Old Safari history & tabs show up after clearing history

My wife's 2011 2.93ghz Macbook Pro, running 10.9.5, keeps opening 6 of the same tabs, with the same websites, every single time safari opens. Every time I clear the history, the history is cleared as one would expect. But when I quit safari & reopen it, the same tabs open & the history shows a week's worth of history from late 2014. Can anyone help with the situation? It's been doing it for months now. Something similar happens with Word as well. I'm guessing a file was corrupted when the laptop ran out of battery a while back.
