Old story on new OS X versions: 8 GB RAM for MBP 3.1 17"

Hi boys and girls.

I recently browsed a lot of forums trying to figure out is the issue with with having more than 6GB RAM for my Mac is coming from hardware or software, does anyone tried this on recent OSX versions like Lion or Mountain which are fully 64bit ?
