Old Summerboard vs New Winterboard

I just got a 3GS 16gb with 3.1.2 it's jailbroken and unlocked. I've already been using numerous hacks like cydia, installous ect. I haven't messed with a hacked iPhone though since I used to have an old 2g several years back.

My question is-- I remember using Summerboard back then to do amazing things! Now it's been replaced by Winterboard which seems alot worse?! Or am I just not understanding how to get the most out of it?

For instance what I am really trying to do is change my icon images straight from my phone. I remember doing this back then. For instance I'd choose an icon like settings, then it'd show me tons of icons I could change it too via icon packs I would have downloaded. Is this still possible? Is there a program still available that I can download icon packs and change my icons to whatever I want right on my phone like I used to??

closest thing i can think of would be iconharvester or something like that. It's a paid package on cydia that allows you to piece together themes and icons from themes and creates new icons when one cannot be found. other than that, you would have to do it yourself by downloading multiple themes, then either using something like ifile to change around names and copy/paste icons to where you need them, or create your own theme with the icons you want and then SSH back to your device, but afaik there is nothing that lets you select each icon and then choose from several new ones. categories has an icon pack you can d/l that lets you choose from a bunch of icons, but only for categories, not actual apps.

Its been so long since I've used SB I didn't remember how it worked. I looked at a couple of SB videos on YouTube and none of them had it function other than selecting one theme at a time. Regardless, you can download entire themes or use iFile to piece together a single theme you want. You can also use Safari Downloader to add indiviual icons you find online to your theme.
