I have an old 1st Gen 3TB Time Capsule. It says the HDD is failing (although it's been saying that for nearly 2 years now). I'm thinking of getting one of the new Time Capsules, but what to do with the old one? One idea is hacking it with a Rasberry Pi.

Currently with my TC, I have partitioned the HDD into two bits. One is a Data drive which does Time Machine backups, while the other is a Storage partition where I house all my iTunes music and video (and my MBP just references its iTunes library on this partition). I did this as my SSD on my MBP wasn't big enough.

I'm thinking of taking the old TC and fitting it out with a Rasberry Pi and having it be an iTunes server. This way my MBP wouldn't have to be on for me to access my media on my AppleTV or any other Apple device. I'm not looking for this set up to run XBMC or anything, and wouldn't need to be connected to a screen except for maintenance purposes. I just basically want an always on OSX device that can have iTunes running and sharing my library. This way I can keep my new TC as just a TC machine and nothing else. I would also try and get the RPi machine to make regular backups of it's media onto a second HDD (perhaps connected via USB) or to the new TC for redundancy purposes.

Has anyone had any experience with this?
