so we all know the huge benefit of oled. Black pixels = no display battery usage. But whats with dark grey pixels like many apps use as a „dark mode“? How many states does a oled pixel has? Like:

White pixel = full activated
Grey pixel = not full activated
Black pixel = not activated

Or

Black pixel = not activated
Any other pixel = full activated

Thanks!

The former.

LCD's have a backlight that is on full blast (or to whatever your brightness settings allow) all the time. The LCD screen then filters the light.

OLED is an emissive display. There is no back light, the pixels themselves light up. Therefore, low light output by the pixel requires lower power.
