I was wondering if anybody else has seen this.

I occasionally, after putting my watch on to charge, notice several minutes later that it's sitting there with the backlight at full brightness and have actually woken up during the night to find that it's been like that for quite a while.

The watch is warm to the touch of course, probably more than from a regular charge and I'm a little worried that I'm going to end up with the back popping off like some other had.

Maybe this is one of the contributing factors..?

There is no 'backlight' since it is an OLED. Unlike an LCD it is either off or a light of some color. Post a pic of what you are seeing.

Actually good point, it's not the backlight but the OLED providing the luminescence (title updated to reflect this).

I'm not charging it at the moment and it's an infrequent occurrence + I don't have a PIC.

Basically what I'm seeing is the regular watch face that I use constantly on - not the nightstand mode etc.

I can clear it by taking it off the charger, unlocking the watch and putting it back on the charger but sometimes it doesn't clear until I have let the watch display go off before putting it back on the charger... i.e. put it back too early and it stays lit up.

Most of the time it works fine and goes dark after a few seconds of being put on the charge.

I have had this happen. Try to un-pair and re-pair. It should fix it. The pairing procedure creates a backup on your iPhone so it's not too painful, except the long wait, especially when it re-sync your music to AW. Plus, the need to set up Apple Pay again.

I'm not sure how I would know if this was fixed as it's so infrequent really.
