So I was playing with various combinations of apple/option/shift and the f-keys to see what kinds of things were mapped to them, and it turns out I've done two annoying things. The first is some sort of accessibility thing where when I type things or click on things, some strange voice tells me everything I'm doing, and the poor guy is trying to do it in real time, but I just type faster than he talks.

The second is that I used to be able to use the function keys (volume, Expose, brightness, etc) shortcuts without using the Fn key, but now I either use that key or it does something wrong (F12, for example pulls up Dashboard without Fn, and with it, it increases volume, just like it should.

So what do I do to fix it?!

Thanks.

i have a feeling you can control all this simply though system prefs. the voiceover should be in universal access. the other ones in there, too. keyboard and mouse or the expose and spaces tab. hope this helps.

I got the talking to go away in universal access (I promise I figured it out myself after posting here!) but the shortcut is :apple:-F5.

Ah. The other problem was solved by hitting Shift+F1.

Now I can go to sleep on the couch happy.
