MY journey so far....
  1. first 16" MBP M1 Pro had faulty SD Card Reader > returned
  2. second 16" MBP M1 Pro resolved the SD Card Reader, however the speakers were noticeable less powerful and missed the bass of the first machine > returned
  3. third 16" I decided to try an open box M1 Max from Best Buy > both SD card works and Speakers sound phenomenal again. Battery life is worse however I can sleep at night knowing I will be able to game when more games get optimized over the coming years.
take home point - this is a new generation with a lot of variability machine to machine. Don't settle and keep returning until you get the right one.

Guess I'm a little surprised you went for a Best Buy open box MBP after the issues with the first two, but sounds like you lucked out that it wasn't returned due to defects.

You should expect worse battery life, as it has a more powerful GPU.

How do you test if the battery life is worse or better than others?

I returned 2 14"'s. Both had very faint vertical grey lines if you looked close on an all-white display.

The one thing that bothers me about Apple though is that when you do a return, there is no space to type in why you are returning the device. because of this, they don't know what the faults are and in turn, will never address them.

Happy with your new unit ?

Idk how u did this tbh, replacing a unit takes at least 2 weeks for me..

This is interesting ...but I ordered a custom M1 Max that's not likely to be found in stock at any local stores. I have yet to really test out the card reader to verify if it has issues or not. But its speakers sound amazing (better than my 2019 MBP Core i9, which was better than any previous Mac laptop I ever owned), and haven't noticed any other problems.

I feel like if the card reader does have problems, I'd rather wait to see if this is just due to a difference in components used and can be addressed in an OS X update -- vs the risk of exchanging it for another MBP that might have bigger problems.

So you sleep better at night because you think machine you bought now will be able to play games in few years? Damn brah your life must be perfect if this is the only thing that kept you up at night.

Fr I'm jealous.

If this could help with my insomnia I'd buy a M1 max in a heartbeat

nah you need that mindset in your head that developers will for sure start developing most of the games for mac in "couple" years, but you need that computer right now you know because .... reasons and for sure there wont be more iteration of M3,4,5 in couple years with superior performace when games are all made for mac, but hey! you sleep like a baby because of that /s

And i answered
"Lol"

LMAO! yes, the nightmares and insomnia stopped with the MAX.

honestly, gaming kinda sucks right now, but it would be hard to go down to the pro after gaming a bit with this.
