I'm sort of new to the Apple world. In the past, when there was a new iPod touch release, is it in any way comparable to the iPhone release, where you need pre-orders, and it's sold out for months, or is it enough of a less popular product where you can generally buy them in-store right away?

There probably wont be pre-orders...They will be in stores right away.
That's good news for me. I want to get one for myself and one for my wife right away.
Hopefully you're right, and even the base model will have the full feature set along with the lower storage space.
What about WalMart? Would they offer pre-orders? They do that with new games so you know you can get one before they run out...
