Ok guys,

This seems to be yearly thing with me lol. I have my iMac and my IPP. Like I said in my last thread about the iPad, every device has it’s place. I want to get a MBP, but not sure if I should just geat a 13”, used 15” mid 2019 or go for the base model 16”. I need at least 16GB Of ram. Maybe even 32.

I do a lot of photograph. I had the MBA and it just could not handle it. I kept hitting the yellow and red memory pressure. I had bought it because I got a great deal on it with the 128 SSD and 8GB of ram. But I sold it last week. I kept reading you can use this for editing etc... without issue. Not true for me at least.

A bigger SSD Is also something I’d like too have. At least 512GB. I utilize a lot of cloud storage, so I don’t need a ton in computer. These things keep bringing me to the base model 16”. The the SSD is 512GB and it’s 16GB Ram out the gate. That new keyboard is also attractive, although, I never had any problems with the butterfly keys.

I’m also going to run windows on this machine as well VIA Parallels. That’s why upgrading to the 32GB ram seems to be a good idea, although, not sure if needed. I also, do a lot of excel files and such. It’s easier on the laptop VS my iPad For that.

What do you guys think? Should I look for a cheaper USED 15” 2019 or 13, or go for the 16”? I plan on keeping this for a long while. I just want to buy once. I seen some great prices on some specd out 15’s.

Thanks,
Tommy

I would go with the base 16” if you can swing it.

Here is the thing, will 16GB ram be enough? I’m not worried about the GPU. I found on Adorama, a nice Mid 2019 15” with 1TB SSD, 32GB ram and a 555X GPU For 2450.00. Would you still go for the new 16”?

I’m guessing the Keyboard is with it as well?

I should be able to swing these prices. if I want the New 16” with 32GB ram, its going to be 2700 or so. I’m just not sure what to do.

If money was no option lol, I wouldn’t care. I need to also purchase a lens for my camera. I need to hit lotto lol.

Yes, 32GB is better, but you can get really far on 16GB. I‘ve done some pretty big high megapixel, 100 layer Photoshop edits without much effort on my 2016 16GB Macpro. 16GB is a whole new world compared to 8GB.

It’s a close call I guess, there are probably a few situations where the 32GB would out perform, but I would not expect the base 16” to be slower often. There might be some third party resellers or edu discounts that could help bring the price down. I am doing a trade in, edu discount, and 3% cash back on mine, that dropped the price significantly.

(Full disclosure, I did just order a 64GB 16”, but primarily driven by me running an enormous number of apps and VM’s across multiple monitors at once)

Check this out:

Best buy has a used “open box” 16” with I9, 1TB SSD, 16GB ram and 5500M GPU for 2650. That seems like a good deal. You think I can use 16GB Ram without a problem then, from what your saying. They also have a used 16 base for 2250.00.

Is there a way for me to get an education discount Lol?

Now I’m thinking lol.

just google apple education store and buy it through there. apple doesnt verify anything.

yup, base model =$2199, base + 32 gigs ram = $2559, higher end stock config $2599
I did check it out. Interesting. I’m trying to see how else I can get discounts. The one at Best Buy had everything else but the 32GB ram For 2640.00. Dammit, why can’t I be rich lol.

The $2640 model at best buy is the $2599 model brand new from the edu store.

Agreed. Please dont ruin it for the REAL students. I remember buying Visual Basic 4 for super cheap 20 years ago via the Edu discount (of course, from Microsoft not Apple but that's not the point) - it made me what I am today (pro developer). Let's not take that away from our kids.

I didn’t even know you could buy from that store until the members said that.

I’m not sure what or where I’m buying from. I need to see my funds. I like buying used usually. If it makes you feel better, I have 3 teachers that I can ask to help me if I wanted too.

I’m not here trying to take advantage of anyone. Someone posted up, hey go look here, so I went and looked.
Besides, you still pay tax which eliminates most of the discount anyways. Adorama or B&H don’t charge that.

I understand what your saying, so don’t worry.

Good point. I have a disabled daughter, and thanks to some idiot advertising on Craigslist that they would use their disability to escort families to the front of the lines at Disneyland, we lost the “front of the line” privilege which they used to offer.
Students deserve a break; don’t make things worse for them.
