without extending the contract?

Any idea how much this will cost?

But why? You will still pay the same monthly fees as you do with a contract, plus you pay a lot more for the initial outlay. The Verizon iPhone won't be usable on any other carrier.

True, if you're going to be using the phone all the time, get the subsidy.

However, I've paid full price (and/or bought phones off eBay) so that I'm not required to pay for a data plan for a phone until I actually use it.

(Requiring a data plan for subsidized smartphones is something that came along with the iPhone. Didn't have to before then. Gee, thanks, Apple and ATT.)

That way, I have the phone without obligation and can swap it on or off my data plan number any time I want.

I am saving my upgrade for the new one in the summer/fall..

It'd be more cost-efficient to wait until June for the new one. The iPhone 4 value would be rather slow, especially so because of it's CDMA technology binding it to Verizon (no unlock through jailbreak that is).
