After downloading, but before I set the installer going, I copied the download to an external drive. I copied the whole Install OS X Mavericks package from /Applications rather than just InstallESD.dmg as with previous versions as I believe you need more than that with Mavericks.

Can I just copy that to /Applications on my second MBP and App Store/Software Update will detect it and allow it to install or, alternatively, can I just double-click it and it'll run the installer?

Don't really want to burn a DVD or make a USB installer (don't have a >=8GB USB stick anyway).

If it works as Mountain Lion did, yes this will work.

Yes, it does. Thanks :)

Interestingly, once I'd copied it to /Applications, App Store showed it as Downloaded but didn't appear to have anyway to kickstart the install.
