I am going to set up a new imac today and have a new time capsule to go with it. My current wifi is ancient belkin with a PC.

Should I set up the imac first or the time capsule first? Or can I do both together?

Oh, and if it doesn't show already, I have no experience with macs.

I don't think it matters which you do first. I would get the computer up and running them setup the TC.

Mac, then wi-fi
You do not want to mix an unfamiliar wi-fi and an unfamiliar Mac together.
Lion cares deeply about the state of your wi-fi; so much so that an unstable connection can cause the Mac to beachball.

If that happens, how will you determine whether the problem is in the time-machine wi-fi or the Mac?

One thing at a time is a good rule of thumb, unless you're already quite familiar with all the components of a system. It usually takes longer doing things step by step, but it also guards against getting into hard to diagnose problems on doubly unfamiliar territory.

thank you both for the advice. I've got the imac up and updating it. I'll save tomorrow for the time capsule.
