Is there a way to use one gmail account and retrieve that mail using different macs using mail? My buddy and I are setting up an account for our business and we want to be able to retrieve mail using the same gmail account. He will be using his mac from his place and I will be using my mac from my place.

We want to be able to access the same account using our individual macs.

Thanks!

This is possible.

Enable IMAP in GMAIL settings so you if email is checked on your computer, it's also checked on his.

Just use the same settings on both computers and it will work.

There's a limit though on the number of simultaneous connections - http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=97150.

I manage fine with two Macs running Mail, an iPhone, and a Linux machine running Thunderbird, all on at the same time. But as it says in that link, a single account setup may open several connections. I've been lucky in that I've never reached the limit.

For business purposes, you might be better to pay for Google Apps for business.

That's close to what we want but we want the original messages marked as UNREAD in gmail, just like when you use POP

Unfortunately, the mail only arrives at one computer, not both when using POP.

You can chose to leave the message on the server with pop ("keep gmail's copy on the inbox")and it should allow you to get the email on multiple computers. But, then your server will be loaded up with all of the emails and need to be managed.

You could use IMAP and mark everything as unread in your Mail.app. It will sync the unread status back to gmail though it is not a very elegant solution.

manually marking as read?

Exactly. If you have one mac and one gmail, you read the message using POP and it still shows as UNREAD in gmail. Using IMAP, you read it in Mail and it translates into the gmail account. We want to be able to read the message and still have it as UNREAD in Gmail. I know this seems weird, but we have different approaches to things and offer different advice or suggestions.

Like the saying goes, "If you have two people in business together who agree on everything, one is unnecessary." We like to see where we agree and disagree when we respond to emails. I hope this makes sense because it makes sense to us. Then again, we use macs so we are not the most obviously conventional people on the planet.
