STORY

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian schoolchildren who received laptops from a U.S. aid organization have used them to explore pornographic sites on the Internet, the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported Thursday.

NAN said its reporter had seen pornographic images stored on several of the children's laptops.

"Efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials," NAN said.

A representative of the One Laptop Per Child aid group was quoted as saying that the computers, part of a pilot scheme, would now be fitted with filters.

Wow, those children really are learning fast. I think it would have taken me a few months to learn how to spell "porn" in english and then start downloading.

Yup, and how long before they hack the "filters"?! On a serious note, maybe they can capitalize on this and try for some education on the topic. In most developing nations, it would be quite a significant achievement if they expelled the the notion that, "If you use protection you will go to hell" ...

If they think porn is bad, just wait til they discover limewire! Not only will they get viruses, they will get illegal music and more porn!

Is anyone else highly amused by this?

Yes. I reckon it's probably a miniscule portion of the pilot scheme that are doing it but the media and anti-Negroponte brigade are having a field day. It is a pilot program after all and such problems were bound to arise.

Unfortunately they only have 1GB of Flash storage, no large pr0n archives for these kiddies http://up.*************/files/1/Images/Smilies/CryStomping.gif

But with the sharing capability they could each have 2 or 3 images!

This is very true, particularly if you consider the declining average age of third-world populations (more kids per capita) while that of the industrialized world is on the rise (more adults who ain't having kids). The energy of global youth is shifting, and now pron will be fanning the flames!

This story kind of reminds me of when I got my first laptop, aged 13. :p And shortly after, my discovery of 'Clear History' and best of all, 'Private Browsing' in Safari! Hehehe :D

When I first saw this thread, I thought it was going to be the bad news that M$ had finally shoehorned their way into having Winblows installed on the OLPC laptops.

Seeing this though, I don't know whether to be relieved or cry...

This is a surprise? Seriously, kids + the Internet, of course they are going to look up that stuff, especially if they haven't had access to it before.

I know this isn't probably going to go down well with some people, but why not just let them look at it or educated them about the topic. If more restrictions are put in place all they are going to do is try harder to look at it/get around the filtering.

^^^Maybe, but I doubt they have the natural technical know-how to just go around a filter. Kids in our society can't really be compared with kids from their society in this regard. They may be smart, but if this is the first time you have seen a computer, it's hard to get past a filter, so I think it may work.

solve the problem of poverty and starvation - give the children laptops!!!

Imagine if the children eventually search for the words "3rd World Country" and go, "Oh snap.....I live in a 3rd world country?!!" Maybe knowing how the rich Americans and British lifestyle looks like (ie: the cars, the houses, pools, bathrooms made of solid marble, etc) isn't a good thing to see photos of right now. Also, finding out that 3rd world countries (partially) exist to ensure that 1st world countries exist isn't a good thing for them to realize either.

It's like when Carlton (on the show Fresh Prince) found out he was black for the first time.

I don't reckon that pron will be much of a problem. How many of the owners of these machines are likely to have a Credit Card to feed the barons?

The RIAA is already gathering a legal team to prepare to sue each of these children when they start stealing music...:D
