Opening ultiple movies at once like quicktime, sometimes i have to use the command line and use mplayer to open multiple movies at once

Couldn't you either - make a playlist if you want to watch several movies.

Or allow multiple instances of VLC - so you can have simultaneous video playback.

My apologies, it appears that multiple instances feature is only in the Windows version of VLC. (I used VLC back when I lived in the dark side)

It appears to be submitted on the feature request list for the OSX version - but I'd browse the videolan forums / wiki for more information on it.

Didn't intend to mislead you there.

open -n ?

On OSX, you can start a multiple instances of any Application by using "open -n". For instance, to start a second instance of VLC, you would type

open -n /Applications/VLC.app

in the Terminal.
