OneDrive for iOS Updated With Redesigned Interface, Drag and Drop, and Files App Support

Microsoft released an update to its OneDrive app on Tuesday that adds support for the Files app in iOS 11 and brings a host of other new features many of which are responses to user feedback.

To begin with, the interface has been overhauled to make better use of screen space and make filenames easier to read, while an ellipsis button next to each item brings up a new contextual options menu, so users no longer need to long-press a file to take actions.

More generally, thumbnail images have been made larger, shared files are now easier to spot, and the multi-column list view on iPad has been redesigned to be less cluttered and give items and filenames more room to breathe. Another welcome enhancement in version 10.1 is expanded preview support for over 130 file types, including Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, RAW, 3D objects, high-precision DICOM, TIFF files, iWork Files, Java/C/Swift, and many more.

In addition, OneDrive now supports drag and drop, enabling users to drag files to emails and move them between open tabs on iPhone and iPad. Several iPhone X UI fixes are also in evidence, with the interface now displaying properly in landscape orientation, while a number of annoying bugs have been fixed, including one that made search results vanish whenever a file was opened.

I have upgraded the OneDrive App on my iPhone 7 and I like it a lot. Tumbnails images now load instantly. And the new expanded preview to support over 130 file types makes OneDrive to be in front of iCloud Drive, Dropbox and Google Drive.

Nice work, Microsoft!:)

Indeed, it took Microsoft far too long to integrate OneDrive into the Files app. But now that it’s here, it looks great. Both OneDrive accounts I use are now fully into Files, and I can access the files and folders quickly. Now I’m a happy camper!

Why is none of the accessed files of OneDrive in the "Recents" section of the Files app listed?
 
FWIW, I've run into a number of issues with the onedrive app (mostly on macos), so much so I barely even use OneDrive at this stage.
 
Say, here's an idea:

Why not make OneDrive on iOS work better by showing the picture-files in their proper color-orientation when using the Smart Invert-Screen feature? instead of the 'negative' image on the screen it displays now. Just a thought.
 
Does anybody know what happened to the 3D Touch actions like peek and pop? Because they don’t work since a few updates.
 
This is great news! We use it heavily at work and this will streamline my work flow.
 
Excellent news, I've been waiting for this. Recently I finally dropped paid Dropbox. I gradually started to strongly dislike them - from the atrocious brand redesign to seemingly always increasing prices. The decision was made easier because I already get 1TB OneDrive with my Office 365 subscription...

Now the last thing I REALLY hope Microsoft releases ASAP - Files On-Demand for Mac (basically the same as Dropbox Smart Sync). It already works on Windows 10 beautifully and unlike Dropbox, Microsoft does not charge you extra for it!

I don't know about that. Having created tens of thousands of .docx files, using macros with pieces of software that the company I work for has developed, and just the fact that it's the standard --- how is it mediocrity? I've tried OpenOffice, LibreOffice, Pages, etc... and none of them come close in my opinion (I support them because I really like open source software). If there was a better product I'd gladly use it.

Agreed.

The company I work for and I really like Google Docs but the problem is, there is no offline copy so we've had users delete their accounts only to have the document they owned disappear and years of work poof gone - some of us created copies but months ago. We still use Google Spreadsheets but we always save offline now. But yeah, nothing compares to Office for real work.

Office 365's collaboration is getting near Google's level now too with the auto save and ability to have many people modify the document via web and via Office on their desktops. Pretty cool.

Agreed! I just dropped my Dropbox subscription as well! Couldn't stand being asked to upgrade to business every few days and the redesign is terrible. My Office 365 subscription - 1TB that I share with my wife and some family members (each get 1TB and Office) - no contest.

Same, I would love the on demand for Mac --- now I just selective sync folders but would love the ability to have that on my Macs - I use it on my Windows 10 laptop with 256GB ssd and have access to all my files without losing space.

I'm looking forward to using iAWriter on my iPhone with the Files app (via OneDrive). Used to do that with Dropbox for journaling, quick notes, etc... with an external bluetooth keyboard.

Great (really).

Now, if Microsoft could only tell me why OneDrive can no longer do adequate searching of my files as it once did -- and, by adequate, I mean just "find words in file names" (much less, "find words in files") -- I'd be a very happy camper. A few months ago during the usual we-don't-fully-sync-that-yet dance OneDrive seems to do every year when macOS is upgraded, I temporarily moved some files out of OneDrive. Once sync'ing was normal again, I moved them back. Since then, the search process has been next to useless from iOS, macOS, Windows, and the Web. Microsoft Support has been fruitlessly trying (apparently) for weeks to figure out why.

Re the whole "Why keep paid Dropbox now?" question: I, too, already get the 1 TB of OneDrive with an Office 365 subscription, but I have two reasons for keeping them both. (1.) As I mentioned above, Microsoft has a tendency to lag behind macOS up-revs, and I don't want to left hanging if sync breaks again. (2.) Some apps are coded to sync better with Dropbox than with OneDrive or other such services; and, while I don't like that, I depend on some of those apps.

Looks like they'll have to come out with another update. Having errors all over the place trying to use the Files app and send files to OneDrive (Download Error). I bet we'll see a fix soon.

Agreed. I love the app. On iOS and on my Mac. Works great. This new iOS update streamlines the app even more. Good job, Microsoft.
 
I was soooo excited they finally have iOS file app support.

And then I tried it a few times with images and videos saving directly into my folder structure through 'Save to files'. My folder structure started refreshing everytime closing my last used directory. Then almost all my files got the "failed to upload". Also recent files doesn't work. Aaaaah good old Microsoft. Shame iCloud on Windows is so bad and without 'file placeholders' and selective sync. Sigh...
