My first post - but long time follower.

My partner and I each have a MBP 13” - both purchased new in November 2018. And both purchased with AppleCare+ (expires next month). We have not needed the AppleCare+ before this issue.

Just over a month ago, one morning, I woke to find that my MBP was dead. After going through the Apple Support line stuff, I drove to the Genius Bar (this was a 4 hour round trip) and submitted it for repair. Fast forward to our return from holidays last weekend. I collected my machine on the Friday evening. The invoice stated that 2 x 512Ghz logic boards, 2x IO boards and 2x Touch ID Boards we’re required for the repair. Totalling £1406.31. Fortunately, AppleCare+ negated this cost. But it is strange that the machine required multiples of the same parts to achieve the repair.

Got it home to find that it wouldn’t charge and again it died. Next morning my wife’s machine did the same thing.

We took both machines to back to the Genius Bar. They checked that both of our chargers were working correctly. We do not have power surge issues where we live. Because of the previous issue the Genius Bar decided to repair my machine in house and sent my wife’s off elsewhere. My repair involved replacing the same items (as above) for a third time.

I collected my machine yesterday, it powered up ok in store. Got it home and after an initial stutter the machine then charged overnight. I was able to restore it from a backup during this morning. And then early this afternoon it has died again. One moment it was working the next it stuttered and died.

I’ve now been without a computer for a month!

My wife has received no updates on the status of her repair.

So for a third time I’m up for a min. 2 hour round journey to the Genius Bar.

I’m interested in thoughts on the issue - both causes and solution?

Make sure you (try to) renew your Apple Care on both devices. You can do it after the Apple Care expires and within 30 days after that. I don't know if the ability to do that varies by country. I just did it and I'm in the US.

I have virtually no thoughts on causes or solutions, especially since you're convinced your power is not to blame.

Extending AppleCare+ is an option here in the UK as well. It can be paid monthly. Which will be handy as we will update in the next few months. Particularly after this.
