Really, it's the culture just in China? I wonder where I have heard the phrase 'Keeping up with the Joneses'. Apparently that phrase has been in usage for more than 100 years. Guess where the drive to keep up with others comes from, yes, you guessed it, insecurity, inferiority complex ..., hence the reference to get an assessment of mental faculties.
