Only 99 Gb of the 128 Gb SSD is free

Hello all,

Apologies if this is a stupid question but upon booting up my air for the first time it appears that I only have about 99 gigabytes of the 128 SSD free to use... I know the OS and pre installed apps use up a bit but didn't think it'd be that much?

Just to give a picture, the system report shows the SSD capacity as being 121.33 GB. Is this less than 128 GB due to formatting?

Of the 121.33 GB, the Macintosh HD is 120.47 GB. Then looking in the storage box on 'about this mac' the following is used out of the 120.47 GB:

Apps:- 5.32 GB
Other:- 15.3 GB

What is 'other'? Is this the OS? I thought the OS would be about 5-10 GB max?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Yeah, if you're coming from the Windows world like me, you'd think things would be a bit more efficient with the way these guys talk about Mac, right? Well, there's a lot you can do to free up space and remove junk on your Macbook Air. I got 106GB free after doing some cleaning and removing of apps I didn't want/need. Tho, if you're not good with computers, it's recommended you stay FAR away from doing stuff like this:

Well I did a bit of searching and found that Daisy Disk app.

Seems that just over 8GB is the 'sleep image' which should make sense as it's meant to be the same as the RAM and about 1.5 GB is 'Garage Band support'.

Ah well. I thought about 115 GB of this 128 GB SSD would be free when new. Good job I didn't get the 64 GB one I suppose!
