Only booting to recovery disk

Yesterday my computer had frozen for a while so I help down the power button to turn it off, however now whenever I turn on my computer it is on the grey screen for a while then the only boots up to recovery disc and when I tried to reinstall the OS my hard drive wasn't there at all.

Did I lose all my information?
Can I get it back?
I'm not too sure what to do from here.
I hope that all made sense.

Once you get to that recovery screen, start Disk Utility and run a repair disk and see if that helps you.
