very weird, but it seems that only firefox has the ability to access the internet. any suggestions on what to do to fix this?

Firefox is the only app that I know of that doesn't use Mac OS X's buit -in proxy settings so that's probably where your problem lies.

Open up system preferences, and click on 'network', highlight your current connection (whatever you use to connect to the internet) and then hit 'advanced'.
Move over to the proxies tab and make sure there's nothing too strange there. It should be the same as the network settings in your Firefox preferences.

socks is running, due to me trying to connect an iphone a long ass time ago. that's it though. OH WOW, haha even though it is supposed to be connected to my network, safari and everything else is connecting to my iphone's network that was supposed to only be computer-computer. hehe sorry to waste your time
