Only list view in iTunes Device menu? No Grid view etc?

When you select and kind of list in the iTunes Devices menu on the left (iphone) all lists are only text lists. At the top there are 4 view options like grid, list, overflow etc but I cannot switch to icon view. All are greyed out. Is this a limitation?

Yes.

Only list view is available for devices. If you want it changed your best option is to submit feedback to Apple.
