To create a zip file, highlight a file or folder and option-click (or right-click) then pick "compress". To open a zip file, simply double click it and the contents are placed in the current folder or a folder is created with the contents inside depending on whether the zip file has folders inside.

There is no need for third party add-on, freeware, shareware, or commercial software to deal with zip files on OS X.

Bud .

If it's in an email you should be able to "save as" and then browse to it in finder and click it.
