Is there a way to always open a finder window as a new tab, instead of a new window?

cmd-t will open a Finder tab. I don't think there's a way to have that set for everything though

If you want that a folder opens in a new tab :

Cmd + double click on the folder.

Finder / Preferences / General : Open folders in tabs instead of new windows

That is checked, and it still opens them in new windows...

Try hold 2 finger click ( Magic trackpad ) it should be the first selection of drop down pane

yea i know i can do it via right click, etc. what I'm asking is how does it default to this action....i mean if the innovation is that Mavericks has this feature but it defaults to the old behavior. then whats the point?

Look @ finder pref. pane - (General tab) look under new finder drop list - Open folders line checked... if so then done deal .... if not checked - tick it and done ..

iloveboobs, look 4 posts above.

Cmd + n will open a new window

Cmd + t will open a new tab

Cmd + double click on folder opens the folder in a new tab.

See posts #2, #4,...

Yes that makes sense, but if I dl a file and say show in finder from dl drop down in safari, is it supposed to open in a new window when the pref for tabs is checked? Because it does that

Also there is a logical disconnect in the instructions. If I'm going into pref and telling it to open NEW windows in tabs and I click Cmd n for a new window how does that not open a new tab? Seems to me that pref is useless.

The preferences panel reads :

"Open FOLDERS in tabs instead of new windows"

It does no say "Open new window in tabs".

Are we all gonna skip the fact that I answered the question in the third post?

Install XtraFinder and realize that stock Finder sucks.

Just saying that stock Finder doesn't do what you're asking and XtraFinder does.

i didn't mean that sarcastically i meant it sincerely. and i did install it but it doesn't solve the problem of going into safari downloads and clicking show in finder that i mentioned above. It still opens that in a new window instead of a new tab. I haven't seen a setting that solves this unless I'm missing something.

Also went into pref and changed the new tab shortcut to Cmd N, which doesn't work.

All you should have to do is enable tabs in the preferences for XtraFinder.
