How do I open Adobe Photoshop CS4 from the desktop?
I have tried dragging, copying and it always opens in applications. what am I doing wrong

I don't understand the question. You want a desktop icon that you can double-click to open Photoshop? The best way to do this is to create an alias on your desktop, which you can do by command-option-dragging the application from your apps folder onto your desktop.
 
The point is that he wants to open Photoshop from the Desktop and not the Dock, which he probably has hidden to conserve screen space. Perfectly legitimate reason- the Dock popping in and out can be annoying, especially in graphic design when you might be trying to work on the edge of an image. Then again I don't know for sure nor do I really care.
