Anyways, just save the attachment to your desktop or something, then right click on it and select Open With -- select TextEdit to view the doc.

What kind of document is it?
.doc, .rtf, ....?

You should see the file extension in your Mail programme or when you click the file on your desktop and Get Info about it (Command + I).

How big is it? And does it fit, what it should contain?

Hi There,

When you click once on the attachment in Mail a dialogue box should pop up with two options. One will ask you where you want to save it, unless you use the other option which is to choose an application to open it.

For an .xls Neo or Open Office will work as well as the iWorks and MS Office suites.
Once you choose the app, all of those type file attachments will be opened the same way automatically without prompting.
