Hi there,

This is my first post on MacRumors, so please be nice!

Recently after upgrading to Mavericks I started receiving the following message 'Open error 5:"Input/output error"' relating to everything in the directory /Volumes/Macintosh\HD/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/2.0/usr/share/ri/2.0.0/system/Zlib.

It sounded pretty nasty, and it turned out to be the case when a few days ago my MacBook began crashing a few seconds after booting (grey apple logo screen, about 1/9 of grey load bar). So using an old external backup I had of the hard drive I managed to clone everything bar the corrupted folder.

I wanted to try and remove the guilty folder in Macintosh HD from here, but I am struggling to do so:

sudo rm -r Zlib/
override rwxr-xr-x root/wheel for Zlib/? y
rm: Zlib/: Read-only file system

'the item "Zlib" can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted.'

Is it going to be possible to do this, or am I going to have to re-image Macintosh HD using the clone?

Thank you for your help!
