On my new iMac 21.5 I inadvertently dragged the Application folder out of the Dock and it disappeared in the puff of smoke. I managed to drag a new alias back to the Dock, but when I click it now it only gives me the finder, but does give me the large window with all the icons displayed.
How do I restore this aspect?

Launch Finder
Under Macintosh HD, find the folder called Applications
Drag that folder to your Dock

You don't need to create an alias... that happens automatically

HI, and thank you.
When I drag the App folder to the dock what then shows in the Dock is the Address book icon. It does work though because if I click the Add Bk icon I get the display wanted. But, why does the Add Book icon show rather that the Application icon??

Right-click on the icon on the Dock and select Display as > Folder.

wrong icon showing

Right-click on the icon on the Dock and select Display as > Folder.

I guess I did not make myself clear. When I move the "Applications" folder to the Dock what shows now in the Dock is the Icon for "Address Book", not "Applications".
Strangely when I click on the Address icon it displays, in fan form, all Applications.
But, why does not the "Application" icon show in the Dock?
While I can operated with the Address icon standing for the Applications, it would be nice to have the correct icon in the Dock.

Did you try what GGJstudios suggested? I believe that answer is spot on.

When "Display As" is set to Stack, the icon that appears in the Dock is the first one in the folder. In this case, that is probably Address Book. When "Display As" is set to Folder, the icon will be the, uh, folder.

Right click or control click on the Address Book/Applications icon and change "Display As" to Folder. This will get you what you want. I promise.

Ah Ha!

It is people like you that have made my years on a Mac a true joy, especially when I've been obtuse.

Thanks again.
