I have an external hard drive that is locked and encrypted, and I have forgotten the password to gain access. I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have advice on bypassing the password to get into the drive to access its current contents? The drive was erased and encrypted using the same machine I am on now about a year ago.

No, the encryption cannot be bypassed without the password. When was the last time that you connected the disk to the computer and did you need to enter a password then too? Chances are that, if you have a Time Machine backup of that time, the disk password is still in your login keychain, which you can inspect with the Keychain Access application.
