I have a website that I need to open with Safari as it won't display properly in Firefox 3.6.3. From the Address Bar in Safari, I dragged a link to my desktop, right-clicked and checked it to always open with Safari. The name of the link is something like "PITA.webloc"

When it opens that first time, it dose open in Safari, but subsequently, always opens in FF. I also right-clicked to "Get Info" and indicated it to always open with Safari. While "Get Info" shows that correctly, it still always opens in FF.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are any number of ways that you can open the site in Safari while maintaining Firefox as your default browser:
  • Keep Safari open and use it exclusively for your site.
  • Drag & Drop the .webloc web archive on Safari.
  • Make Safari your default browser and get a life.

Make that website your home page in Safari and set Safari to open your home page in new windows. Then whenever you open Safari, you will have that page show up first thing.

I appreciate your replies.

1) While I realize it is not a big footprint, it seems a waste of resources to keep a program open to only access occasionally.
2) Dragging the webloc onto Safari means opening Safari and then dragging. Not a one-click solution and I could more conveniently bookmark it in Safari.
3) My life includes much preferring Firefox to Safari as my default browser.

4) Making that web page my home on Safari makes sense and is an easy solution

I guess I'm one of those people, when they see the option is there to have something always open using a given program, expects it to work. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong or had an incorrect setting, but it looks like in this case, its only there for window dressing.

Thanks again.

Not true. It is easy to forget that applications that are open in the background are even installed on your system.

Wrong.

It's an application, not a member of the family or a favorite pet.

Put Safari in your dock. Whenever you want to go to that page, drag your webloc onto the Safari dock icon. That way Safari does not need to be open all the time. It will open as soon as you drag the webloc to it.

create a 'InternetShortcut' file

don't use a .webloc file.
create a 'InternetShortcut' (.url file) and it will always default to Safari.
copy this to a text app and save it with the extension .url

[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.apple.com/
IconIndex=0

Brilliant!! Yours and After G's answers give me two convenient options to use Safari and access this website by a single click.

BTW, Is this a Mac specific function? I can't find a reference anywhere for creating an internet shortcut.

Thanks to you and all those with constructive suggestions.

For example my friend sent me a link to video on youtube site and I want specific app always open only youtube links (like in iOS youtube links mostly are opened in YouTube App)
