OpenAI today announced the release of new o3 and o4-mini AI models, which the company says are its smartest models to date. o3 and o4-mini can use and combine all ChatGPT tools, including web searches, analyzing files and data with Python, reasoning about visual input, and generating images.

The models have been trained to reason about when and how to use different tools to provide detailed and thorough information, and to better understand and answer multi-faceted questions. They are able to "think" with images, blending visual and textual reasoning.

o3 excels at coding, math, science, and visual perception, and OpenAI says that it's ideal for complex queries where an answer is not immediately obvious, and it is adept at visual tasks like analyzing charts and graphics.

o4-mini is a smaller model that is optimized for quick and cost-efficient reasoning, and it is ideal for math, coding, and visual tasks. It supports higher usage limits than o3. Both of the new models are designed to be more natural and conversational, offering more useful and verifiable responses.

o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini-high are available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users as of today, replacing o1, o3-mini, and o3-mini-high. Free users are able to try o4-mini by using the "Think" option in the composer when submitting a query. Rate limits remain the same.

This is such a fun time to be a tech nerd!!! 🤓

I love finding cool new ways of using both hardware and software. These AI models have advanced so quickly, it’s incredibly interesting to see how they improve on previous tasks, and also how completely new things are increasingly possible!

Example: The other day, I was given a sheet of paper with a list of doctor’s offices on it with addresses. To decide which one would be best for my family, I started by snapping a pic and asking ChatGPT which was closest to my home. It spit out an answer in seconds, giving me a great starting point!

Running circles around Siri

Doesn't matter. Apple builds the hardware and operating systems that consumers use to access these competing services, so it's still a win for them whether Siri existed at all.

And Apple is rarely first to market. Doing it better is their goal, and the new Siri will be able to leverage the broader industry-wide models through Extensions support. Siri couldn't be in a better position to capitalize off what is happening in the market.

Do the new models support reasoning?
I cancelled my OpenAI subscription since the open source DickPic V3 R1 came out, but I may give it a try with the new o3 and o4-mini.

The speed of these iterations is breathtaking. It's starting to work its way into my daily workflows and usurping Google as my first stop for researching a new topic. ChatGPT also helps me with simplifying my communications. I write 'stream of consciousness' draft into the input window, and it spits out coherent email wording.

I use perplexity as my primary google replacement.

These are fully capable assistants now. Apple needs to allow us to access AI like this hands free via voice while locked, in place of Siri. It would be way more useful than "I found this on the web". Pixel has this already with Gemini Live. Feels behind the times to have to go get your phone to access an assistant like this through the ChatGPT app. Just let us go directly to ChatGPT voice mode or at least have a back and forth with it (currently ChatGPT in siri does not do continuous conversation). Otherwise I'm not sure how they'll keep up with this.

Regarding deeper integration, I'm not sure. Could surface APIs (like App Intents) / data to smart AI like this and it would already be able to do most tasks for you, right now. But then that doesn't really fit with Apple's privacy considerations, and Apple doesn't have control over the full vertical stack which is what they do best. Google has a good position here for vertical integration being both the AI and phone creator.

Yes - have a perplexity pro account as well, but I find I reach to ChatGPT more because I can go deeper with follow-ups. Perplexity is great though.

I really hope you are right. I am a big Siri fan.

o4-mini-high (and o3-mini-high) has to be one of the worst named things I've seen in a while... and that's saying a lot considering the rest of their names
