I opened a new aluminum 2.0ghz Macbook today, with 160gb HD. I've run all the updates, installed a few programs, and now when I idle, the hard drive makes a clicking sound. It sounds almost like a bouncy ball dropping from 1cm off of a table. It's just "click" (pause for 10 seconds) "click" (pause for 10 seconds), etc.

Why is it doing this? I ran disk utility and everything checks out fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

-Evan

What make of hard drive is it ...Toshiba perhaps ?

It could be the power save function of the drive making that noise...

There have been countless threads on this issue. It is just easier to hear on these new machines but it isn't a new problem. There may be some solutions, but I haven't tried them yet. Just do a MR search for hdapm.

Mine did that the first weeks, no longer hear it except while doing HDD intense stuff.

I believe it's when it's all silent you should worry.

Not me!

Fix it with hdapm, if you want.

One of my recent blog articles outlines the trials and tribulations I went through to fix this maddening clicking.

My guess is that Apple will do anything to increase battery life, including killing your hard drive.
