Opening a large rar file.

My friend sent e a 4gig rar file but stuff it won't unrar it and unrarx says it is to large. So what other software can I use to unrar it? Thank you.
 
I've used RAR Expander in the past and been happy with its performance...maybe give that a shot. I have no idea if it can handle files that large though...can't hurt to try though.
 
UnrarX and RAR Expander are the only ones I've used, so I can't suggest any others. A Google search will likely turn up more options, but I have no idea how good they'll be.

BTW: Possible fix for the OP from the UnRarX forums:

Tried to expand the same archive from the external drive - but selected Desktop as destination:

I tired rar expander but i get a out of space error. I 100gigs free on the external hd so that should not be an issue. So yeah. Thank you BTW this on a mbp
 
Did you try expanding it to the Desktop using UnRarX as Mitthrawnuruodo suggested?

Well... I have. And after MacPar Deluxe pronounced all files fine. The end of the error message is below. Note the final determination that the file was just too big, just as Bloodycape said. UnRarX seems to crash at somewhere around 4 gigs. I can’t immediately expand the file to the desktop as there is only about 7 gigs free there; I’ll have to find some stuff to throw away. The small HD on my Mini is pretty well dedicated to stuff I use often, but there’s always SOMETHING I can do without. This is a slow process, but I’ll let you know what works for me, eventually. If anything.
