Opening a Word document from the dock opens behind other documents I have open

I work with multiple Word for Mac 2008 documents simultaneously. But if I go to maximize a document that's sitting in the dock, it automatically goes behind the document I already have open. Is there a way to stop this happening so that the document I maximize automatically appears at the front of the screen?
