Hello,

How do I open an app and have that app active?

For example, I'm using Safari and I then want to open another app (let's say calculator), Calculator will open behind safari. I would have to either minimize the safari window, drag the window, or click again on calculator app.

This only happens in Ventura.

Thanks!

That's not normal--even in Ventura. When you open an app on macOS it becomes the active app by default and will be in the foreground. The only exception I can think of is if the app you're currently using has a setting to "Float on Top" (like QuickTime does, for instance) that you have enabled. But even then, when you open another app, it will be active (the menu bar changes to that app), but the app window will be hidden behind the floating window of the app you were using. But as far as I know, Safari doesn't have an option to keep/float it on top, unless you're using some sort of extension or other third party software to do that.

Have you tried simply restarting your Mac?

How are you launching Calculator? Via Finder > Applications > (double-click) Calculator? or Launchpad? or Spotlight search?

Thanks for the replies. I don't know why but everything seems to be working as it should be. Weird the day I decide to finally ask about this, it's behaving like it should be.
