Is there a keyboard shortcut for opening folders in finder. I am used to the enter button on windows and keep changing the file name by accident. Sorry for my stupidity.

No need to apologise mate. COMMAND-O is the open sequence in most apps, including Finder. COMMAND is the key that sometimes has a clover-style symbol on it, a hollow Apple symbol, or the word COMMAND. It's generally near the SPACEBAR. :)
 
Another option would be to change the Finder view to Column view. If you're using Leopard it's the one that third one from the left. As shown here:

This way a single click of the mouse or movement using the arrow keys will open the folder in the adjacent right column.
