Is there a keyboard shortcut for opening folders in finder. I am used to the enter button on windows and keep changing the file name by accident. Sorry for my stupidity.

No need to apologise mate. COMMAND-O is the open sequence in most apps, including Finder. COMMAND is the key that sometimes has a clover-style symbol on it, a hollow Apple symbol, or the word COMMAND. It's generally near the SPACEBAR. 
Another option would be to change the Finder view to Column view. If you're using Leopard it's the one that third one from the left. As shown here:
This way a single click of the mouse or movement using the arrow keys will open the folder in the adjacent right column.
