This is probably something that everyone but me understands, but I find it mysterious. I just "upgraded" from an iPhone 6 Plus to an iPhone 7 Plus, and I notice that when the phone is lying on a table or even is in my hand and is asleep, if I tilt it up, the lock screen sometimes appears, but only sometimes, without my having to touch the home button. I didn't have a 6s, so this is probably why the phenomenon is new to me. Is there a special way of raising the phone so that the lock screen appears every time without my needing to touch the home button rather than only occasionally.

It's a feature of iOS 10 that works with the 6s and 7. Officially, it's called "raise to wake." It sounds like tilting the phone while it's laying in the table isn't quite enough to trigger the raise to wake function.

That's right. I have to pick it up. What I don't understand is why it only seems to work sometimes.

Raise to wake is yet another feature that sounds good in theory but is more trouble than it's worth in practice.

I turned it off.

Thanks for the help everyone. Since there is a difference of opinion about how useful it is, I'll experiment with it.

Together with touch instead of press to unlock, it's as if it doesn't even have a lock on it when you're the rightful owner. Fantastic features.
