I have some .msg files that I need to get opened. I'd prefer a free program to view them in the proper format, with the ability to save them as text, or rtf, or some other more useful format.

What do you guys recommend?

I don't have access to outlook, and I'd prefer to avoid any sort of Microsoft software if possible.

Old thread, but I came across this searching for a way to read .msg files on my Mac - turns out there is an app in the App Store called MailRaider (was free) that worked really well for me.

I'm scratching my head on this one as well.

I have a bunch of emails coming in which have .msg attachments.

Try as I might (Mail.app, Sparrow.app, Outlook on Mac, Outlook on XP, emailchemy, MailRaider), I can't open them properly at all. I've tried various machines (SnowLeopard, Lion, Mountain Lion).

Just tried on my iPhone, and not only did it open the .msg attachment, it also opened the embedded PDF attachment within the .msg.

So for now, I'm grabbing the attachments on my iPhone and forwarding back to myself to read on the Mac.

Posting this in case someone else has the same problem. I have no idea why this works.

Apps like MailRaider are good at opening msg files from outlook. But msg files from squirrelmail are an entirely different breed, despite sharing the same file extension.

Have you figured out how to open the non-outlook msg attachments?
I am in the same situation as you: msg attachments open fine in my ipad, but not in my iMac, even though they are both running the Mail app.

I think I know why this might be - although I've never used SquirrelMail myself. Please try using the latest version of MailRaider (version 2 - released onto the App Store just last week) and let me know if that sorts the problem. If it doesn't, please email me (support@45rpmsoftware.com) and I'll do my best to ensure that this format is supported in a future version of MailRaider.

Please note, I'm very responsive to support requests - so don't suffer in silence, or waste time searching for a workaround. Just send me a mail!
