Opening xcel 2004 in Excel 2016

I just had to upgrade my Mac O/S from 10.6.8 to 10.11 El Capitan which necessitated upgrading my Office package from 2004 to 2016. I am now encountering mysterious prob;ems opening the old Mac spreadsheets (with .xls suffix). Some of them have opened and I have saved them as .xlsx but others give me repeated error messages. Suggestions will be appreciated.
