what is the difference between opening an application before dragging it into the app folder and dragging it into the app folder and then opening it?

I want to download firefox nightly to test it out but i dont want to install it into my mac. I already have firefox beta installed.

thanks in advance

Only a select few applications require to be put in Applications folder in order to work properly. Most applications - even if downloaded from the Mac App Store - can be placed anywhere, including external storage media. You'll have no problem running Firefox from anywhere on the drive.

The difference is that it isn't installed, it's just running from the disk image.

This blog shows the proper way to install apps and what a disk image is.
