While running OpenOffice.org 1.0.3 under OS 10.2, all the expected font characters in the Symbol set (Insert | Object | Formula | Catalog...) were available. A new installation of OS 10.3 resulted in many of the special fonts being displayed as blank boxes. The Greek character set is only about 15 percent available. All other Greek and Special characters are disabled. This problem causes all documents that use the %<Character> instruction to be displayed without the necessary characters. I've reinstalled the software many times with the same result. I also copied the program directory and all subdirectories from a working 10.2 system, but the problem remained. What happened to the Symbol set?

To restore the font support for Greek letters and bullet point and operator symbols, you need to have a copy of the fonts from an OpenOffice.org 1.1 installation.

In the OpenOffice.org program directory of a system containing v.1.1, enter the subdirectory:

share/fonts/truetype

Copy the following files to the same subdirectory on the Macintosh and overwrite the existing files:

opens___.ttf (Controls the Symbol set)
symbol.ttf (Adds additional character support)
