why does openssh drain battery so much? and is there anyway around it?

without ssh, is there any other way to download and install a deb file directly to the phone?

Safari Download Manager might help.

Or just simply download to your laptop/computer and use either iPhoneExlporer or iFunBox. Both use USB.

Why not use sbsettings to shut off the service when it's not in use?

Instal SBS if you're paranoid, though, I'd say using a app which eats battery to kill one that does not is a bit...

I think your first premise is incorrect. I do not believe open ssh drains battery.
