When I'm at home, I can see my laptop, my wife's laptop, etc. from my iMac. Basically any computer can see any other computer in our home.
I have a Linksys LRT214 router and have an OpenVPN connection set up. I can log in without difficulty, and all traffic is routed through the OpenVPN connection. I can access my local network while away (i.e., can access the router, print server, etc. through its 10.0.1.x IP address). I can connect to the iMac from my laptop by using the "go to server" option in the finder menu and typing in afp://10.0.1.x and can access screen sharing with the vnc://10.0.1.x command.
However, none of my computers show up in the Finder's sidebar like they do when I'm physically at my house.
Does anyone know of a way to fix this? When I try to ping the computer while away, it doesn't respond to anything. Yet I can access it by connecting directly to it. I'm sure there is a setting I have messed up somewhere.
In system preferences' sharing section, I have screen sharing and file sharing both enabled.
I have enabled stealth mode selected in the firewall. I just now realized that. Will try to disable that next time I'm away from home and try to access anything. Not sure what effect that will have on security. (I do not block WAN requests on the router; I do have the other options enabled in the router's built-in firewall). I wouldn't think that would matter since the VPN is making it appear as if I'm at home when I connect.
Thanks!
