There site is very slow, gave up. Does anyone know the cost? How does Opera compare to Safari & OmniWeb?

The site is definitely slow - but you can get through eventually.

Opera is free, but supported by embedded banner ads. IMO, 7.5 is finally a decent enough version of Opera for general use on Macs and it's definitely fast.

is this 7.5 final, or still just the beta? the site appears to be down...
edit : site working now. ooo, its the final version, swanky.

opera gets the thumbs up from me. not had a chance to try it on the mac, but its definitely the most fully featured browser on the pc.

Why would anyone want to pay for a browser? What does it offer that I can't get on Safari or Firefox?

list of features

lots of those features won't seem so useful, but then again tabbed browsing doesn't sound so amazing till you use it
the cmd+z to re-open closed pages (complete with back/forward button history) is a brilliant feature, and being able to re-arrange tabs by dragging them is a curious favorite of mine. built in browser spoofing is rather handy too

A single extension for Firefox already covers what you just mentioned, called Tab Browser Extensions (TBE for short).

It retains history of closed tabs (to reopen them if needed), allows rearranging of tabs, among a ton of other special options including:

Progress meter in tab; duplicate tab; block referrer, etc.

Other things include drag-drop abilities into bookmark toolbar (which is very very useful and easy to use).

I see no reason to use Opera b/c it demands the use of banner ads--unacceptable considering since even IE doesn't do this by default (unless of course you get infected with Spyware). And there is absolutely no way I am paying for a web browser. That is why I will always stick to firefox. Banner ads is a big no-no in my book. Who KNOWS when they will start using spyware in addition to banners.

these work in opera too (well, no progress meter in tab, but a loading icon on the tab, and a diffrent icon/text colour when the tab has loaded), and without an extension, or the rather large list of bugs that extension has.

one of the things that stops me using firefox is that when I click the back button (well, actually, when I do the back mouse gesture) most of the time it doesn't instantly go to the previous page, it has to re-load it. I'm impatient...
opera is faster in general for me aswell. though other people report diffrently

I don't notice it myself. its only 30 pixels high, and is google a text ad
you make it sound like some kind of evil plot to force adverts upon unsuspecting innocents. thay are there so thay can give away the browser for free, up until version 6 there we no ads and you had to pay for it.
plus the ads disappear in full-screen mode.

And there is absolutely no way I am paying for a web browser. That is why I will always stick to firefox.

fair enough. you wonder which saying applys; "the best things in life are free" or "you get what you pay for"

you going to boycott this site then, half the internet as well?
I very much doubt opera will ever include spyware. half of the group that came up with CSS now work for opera. macromedia and adobe are using opera's rendering engine as the preview in their upcoming web development stuff. microsoft is scared enough of opera to deliberately sabotage it. opera is the default browser on Symbian OS phones (yes, its works on mobile phones!) and has been adopted for various 'set top box' type internet on tv devices.
opera's market share for browsers is greater than apple's for computers, but not enough for them to be able to screw around with their customers. try the browser, then if you have any problems with it, or some features you'd like to see visit their forums and you'll get an actual reply from someone at the company! and it seems like problems are sorted pretty quickly.

I'm thinking there should be a seperate 'browser wars' forum. the political forums can't be much worse than this :D

Well, I didn't expect you to make such a big deal out of this, but alright  , if that's what you wanted to do it, by all means, let it out.

Anyway, banner ads are blocked by the usercontent.css that I use with Firefox. In their Tips & Tricks section, frequented by noobs/power users alike, one of the most powerful and useful tweaks is ad-blocking.

This blocks annoying flash ads, to yes, banner ads. Macrumors has one, I know, b/c if I use IE or Avant, it will come up. Thank god for Firefox and the tweaked userchrome.css, I don't have to see it :)

You take alot of my quotes out of context, but I will respond nonetheless. You mention my thing about "banner ads being a big no-no"? I'm talking about the one built into the browser! I've seen people who have strange toolbars installed in IE (one word: spyware); and this is what i define by invasion of privacy. Banner ads on sites? Of course every site has them. Heck, even Newegg has designed a new ad that breaks through my usercontent.css, but since its Newegg (which i actually buy a ton of H/W from), I'll forgive them.

I have never used Opera, but it certainly sounds like you don't use Firefox enough if your gripe is simply:

one of the things that stops me using firefox is that when I click the back button (well, actually, when I do the back mouse gesture) most of the time it doesn't instantly go to the previous page, it has to re-load it. I'm impatient...

AGAIN, there are similar mouse gestures extensions for Firefox. Ok, you like using Opera? That's your choice, and I have my choice. The refresh thing must be a joke, though. Unless you are on dial-up, this is hardly an issue...and I personally haven't experienced this problem either, so there's not much else I can help you with.

You sound like you enjoy picking fights or starting ones. Your disclaimer at the end only further proves me point...ugh:

I'm thinking there should be a seperate 'browser wars' forum. the political forums can't be much worse than this :D

The tone you used, throughout your rant lends itself to a natural troll or flamer...the smiley face honestly does nothing to neutralize it.

I didn't want to pick a fight, but you obviously wanted to. If you wanted to convince me with your argument, consider changing your tone first. There is nothing less convincing than a post that is border-line flame ok?

Actually I won a free 800 G3 iBook just a few weeks ago. So yes, sometimes the best things in life are free. There are other things that you pay for, but get nothing out of (this is what most people call a scam).

Its not as black and white as you put it.
