Yesterday my husband tried download photos from his camera to his mac laptop that runs 10.6.7. It would download part of the photos and then stop
He says that the rainbow wheel starting spinning and the computer started making a lot of clicking sounds and noise.
He shut down the computer by pushing the power switch and tried downloading the photos putting the chip that was in the camera into a converter drive that plugs into a usb port. Same thing happened. He turned off the power switch and tried downloading the photos into my imac desktop. It locked up iphotos and the rainbow wheel started spinning.
It did not mess up my computer but it messed up his laptop. It doesn't work right. He took the battery out and put it back in.
So this morning is the first time I got to see what what happening.
We turned on the computer. It took a long time for the desktop to come up and the computer made loud sounds. We back up his tiles to an external drive because he has never done this. We shut down the computer and have tried turning it back on twice and the desktop does not come up. We get a symbol that is a circle with a line through it.
Where do we go from here? Do we need a technician? Can we start the computer with the disk that came with it?
Also I am not sure which files we need to back up.
We did his
documents
user library
some applications that he bought from the internet. (Did I do this right? I just went to the applications folder and drug the folders for those programs to the external drive)
What else do you commonly back up?
Do we back up the computer library? I think that is different from the user library. I now we should back up photos.
Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.
Also I am not sure if I am posting this in the right place. I went to Mac Operating system and they listed Lion but they didn't list Snow Leopard (I think that is what 10.6.7 is called)
Thanks.
