I recently bought a new 2016 Macbook pro touch bar then realized that it had horrible battery problems and returned it. Then I bought a 2015 MBP due to the great reviews on youtube, but I missed the slimness and the display. The newer display seems much better. This is just a browsing internet computer and watching movies while traveling.

So I bought a 2017 Macbook Pro for $1140 out the door after taxes

This is the first night using the 2017 again and right off the bat I notice the slimness but after using it for maybe an hour of just internet browsing and downloading 2gb and installing microsoft office in the background, the battery percentage dropped from 59% to 42%!!

If you were in my shoes and price were almost the same, which would you buy?

2015 Early MBP- $1,199 + taxes
2017 MBP $1,140 after taxes

Some patience may well serve you better than a new computer. Right after initial setup it is pretty much the norm that some atypical tasks will give battery life a hit that you won't see in in the uses you describe.

Get all of your app installations out of the way and give your MBP a day or so before starting to check your battery life. There shouldn't be a dramatic difference between the 2015 and 2017.
